June is National Rose Month, and although roses are popular every month of the year, we love that there is a special month to recognize this timeless and classic flower. * Roses naturally occur in over 150 species, but none are native to the southern hemisphere.

* Roses exhibit every color except true blue or black. This is due to the fact that roses do not have the necessary gene to produce delphinidin, which is the source of a blue hue.

* The popular “black rose” is not really black – it is a very dark red.

* The first person to cultivate roses in this country was none other than George Washington. That makes him a founding father in yet another way!

* Roses have the possibility of remarkable lifespans. A rosebush at the Hildesheim Wall in Germany has been producing flowers continuously for over 1,000 years.

* The Cherokee Rose is the state flower of Georgia, but actually originated in China – and experts cannot explain how it got there, considering it was discovered in the southern states in 1788.

* Rose hips are accessory fruits on the rose bush. They have more Vitamin C than oranges – in fact, rose hips are considered to be the best source of Vitamin C we know of – and the further north of the equator they grow, the more nutritious they are.
