You may not realize that Maewyn Succat's Day is nearly upon us, probably because you wouldn't recognize the birth name of St. Patrick. Not only is his name a surprise to most, but so is his heritage - the most famous Irishman is not actually Irish, he is British!
How Did That Happen? Young Mr. Succat became Father Patrick when he was ordained a Catholic priest. He became a missionary to Ireland and is thought to have nearly single-handedly converted the small country to Christianity. He was so adored by the Celtic people that the commemorated the day he died with a somber holiday. Over the years, it has become the cultural and religious celebration we know today - which resembles a party more than a religious feast day! Be Bold For Change. This is the rallying cry of the 2017 International Women's Day, which is a day set aside to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a call to awareness for inequality and injustices toward women that still exist in many countries and regions. Organizers of the event realize the responsibility for all to join in solidarity with those who still have a hard fight, maintaining that the story of women's struggle for equality belongs not to any one organization but to the collaborative efforts of all who care about human rights.
In the West, the initiative and associated events focus on recognizing the contributions of women in all aspects of our society. At Schaaf Floral, we know that amazing women are making a difference right here in the Minneapolis area, every day! Who can you honor with a bouquet on International Women's Day? When Carl Rittner opened his School of Floral Design in Boston nearly 70 years ago, he could have no way of knowing how his vision would change the industry. Long recognized as the pioneer of seeing floral design as a serious artistic pursuit, he would eventually serve as the inspiration for Floral Design Day, established in 1995. Across the country, thousands of designers have been influenced by his legacy. We thought it only fitting that as the industry celebrates this special day, we introduce you to one of our designers. Chances are good that if you have ever received a beautiful bouquet or arrangement from Schaaf Floral, Patty may have had a hand in it. Each stone was thought to endow the person wearing it with power, strength, and wisdom - a sentiment only magnified by the rarity and cost of the precious stones. In modern times, the gemstones are used more often as sentimental gifts and tokens in jewelry. And in the floral world, birthstones are beautiful inspiration for birthday bouquets and arrangements.
