The schefflera is a popular green houseplant – and is related to other favorites such as the umbrella plant and the arbicola plant. Although relatively easy to care for, it is a bit sensitive, so you’ll want to pay particular attention to providing sunlight and water in the correct way. Placing a schefflera plant in bright, direct light will burn its leaves so it is best to position it in medium, filtered light. Hint: If your plant begins to get “leggy” and droopy, it requires more light. To help the plant thrive, refrain from watering until the soil in the pot is dry, and then soak the soil thoroughly. Hint: Overwatering a schefflera plant is the most common way that people kill it. Watch for yellow leaves which will indicate that your plant is getting too much water.
Like green plants, flowering plant care will vary based on the plant, but we would like to focus on the beautiful kalanchoe. A member of the succulent family, this plant exhibits bright flowers in varying shades of red, pink or yellow, They love lots of sunlight, but require only one or two hours of direct sunlight per day. Hint: Keep away from hot windows, as they will get scorched. As a succulent, they need only be watered thoroughly once a week – and be careful how you pot them, as their roots will “drown” if the water cannot drain off. They will be comfortable in your home’s temperature but may love sitting outside in the sun for a few hours a day in the warmer months as well. Hint: If you keep a kalanchoe in a pot on your deck or porch, make sure exposure to direct sun is limited.
