Scientific Strides: Not only was Marie Curie a Nobel-award winning Nuclear Physicist in 1911, but as a single mom of two girls (her husband died in an accident)  she raised another Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Irene Curie. The younger Curie said that her mother instilled the importance of hard work and having a purpose to work for – but that science was not seen as the only possible avenue in which to pursue it.

Fighting For Justice: After escaping slavery with her infant daughter in the early 1800s, Sojourner Truth found out that her young son Peter had been illegally sold to a man in Alabama. She hired a lawyer, filed a lawsuit, and won her son back – becoming the first black woman in history to successfully sue a white man in court. Truth became a Christian preacher in New York City and spoke passionately about women’s rights abolition, and the Bible.

Saving the Children:  Kathy Headlee had six of her own children when she adopted the seventh child from Romania and was inspired to start Mothers Without Borders. The organization united mothers to help orphaned children around the world. In 1992, she led a group of volunteers to distribute relief supplies to orphanages and caregivers in Romania; since then, Mothers Without Borders has sent volunteers to help children in Bolivia, Bosnia, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Nepal.

These are just three of the thousands of mothers who, inspired by their own children, made an impact on the world.
