Thanksgiving traditions are at the heart of this special holiday. Many of our customs have been passed down historically for centuries, and some have been established by our own families. But no matter where our traditions come from, our celebrations are unique and memorable because of them. For nearly 50 years, Schaaf Floral has been honored to be a part of your holiday, providing gorgeous bouquets and floral arrangements for your Thanksgiving decor and holiday table.
The first Thanksgiving, celebrated in 1621, was a feast to express gratitude for safe passage and a bountiful harvest – enough to carry them through the winter. The oranges of the pumpkins, the rich reds of the apples, and the golds of the wheat crop are all represented in beautiful bouquets perfect for adorning your home for Thanksgiving dinner.
The foods on the table that first Thanksgiving included venison, lobster, and waterfowl. There was also an abundance of nuts, berries, and gourds. The accounts of the meal, however, seem to be the turkey. It is unclear when the turkey earned the dubious distinction of being the symbol of the holiday, but in the late 1700’s Alexander Hamilton stated, “No citizen of the United States should refrain from turkey on Thanksgiving”
Besides all the food, another of the Thanksgiving traditions we love is that of watching football! In 1924, the Detroit Lions were a new franchise looking for ways to boost attendance. They decided to play on Thanksgiving Day, hoping that with no competing games people would come. They haven’t missed a Thanksgiving Day game since, and this year they will be hosting the Vikings, which should keep Minneapolis glued to their seats until dinner time!
If you are hosting the Thanksgiving dinner and need a stunning centerpiece, or if you are a guest looking for a beautiful hostess gift – Schaaf Floral is the Minneapolis area tradition you don’t want to forget!
