April is the first full month of spring, and as such is the perfect month to have the daisy as its official ambassador. The daisy is perhaps the quintessential flower of springtime, and brings to mind meadows full of white and yellow blooms. In honor of this classic flower having a month dedicated to it, we here at Schaaf Floral thought we would share some daisy trivia.
The name daisy comes from the Old English “daes eag”, or “day’s eye”. The daisy flower head completely closes at night, and reopens with the suns morning rays. The daisy represents purity and innocence.
- Daisies have a huge family, known as vascular plants. Making up nearly 10% of all flowering plants in existence. These flowers have the ability to circulate nutrients and water throughout the entire plant.
- With such a large family, it shouldn’t surprise you that they are found on every continent – except Antarctica.
- Daisies are technically two flowers in one. The center of the daisy is comprised of clusters of tiny disc flowers; the petals are considered another flower.
- Daisy leaves are very high in vitamin C and make great salads. Not only are the leaves edible, but they also have medicinal use – they ease coughs, reduce congestion and are even known to reduce the pain of a sore back.
- Because the flowers are exceptionally hardy and resistant to many bugs and pesticides, daisies can begin to overrun an area if they are not cultivated.

Gerbera daisies are the variety of daisy most often seen at the florist.
