Every year, high schools and colleges across the Minneapolis area celebrate homecoming weekend. Whether you are a current student or returning to your alma mater, the weekend is full of nostalgia and memory making opportunities. One of the most popular events of the weekend is the homecoming dance, and because of this, formal flowers are in great demand.
For the perfect corsages, boutonnieres, and nosegay bouquets, you can trust the experts at Schaaf Floral to create the most beautiful designs for these special occasions.
Both corsages and boutonnieres originated in Europe in the Victorian Era. The French called flowers worn by women “bouquets des corsage”, as they were attached to the bodice, or corsage, of her dress. Boutonnieres, or “button flowers”, were worn to cover up what was considered a design flaw in a popular new fashion trend. Overcoats with collars which could be turned down revealed an open buttonhole, and the boutonniere was thought a stylish way to cover it up.
Did You Know? Boutonnieres were often given to men by their sweethearts, and consisted of a flower pulled out of her corsage to indicate her devotion. To this day, boutonnieres of men going to a dance traditionally match the floral design of his date’s corsage.
Although for hundreds of years the corsage was primarily designed in its traditional form (worn on the bodice of a dress), in contemporary times the wristlet, or wrist corsage, is more popular. A combination of a bracelet and a corsage, a band of ribbon, tulle, or faux pearls or jewels is a setting for a fresh flower design. While many choose to match the flowers to the dress, the trend is now towards vivid and vibrant colors which are complimentary to the overall look.
