Hydrangea are known for their soft color palettes and lush, generous flowers. However you rarely see a bouquet of hydrangea on their own. Instead, they most often play a supporting role in floral design, providing a soft bed for lilies, or a romantic backdrop for roses. Hydrangea are most often available in shades of blue or pink. You might be interested to learn that the color of the flower has little to do with the variety of the bush, and everything to do with the acidity of alkalinity of the soil. A bush growing in acidic soil (pH of less than 6) will produce blue flowers, while a bush growing in alkaline soil (pH of more than 6) will produce pink flowers. The saturation of the color also depends on how far along the pH scale the soil lies.

White and green petals are common in the floral design world, but represent far fewer varieties of hydrangea than their pink and purple counterparts. Green and white flowers are the result of hybridization, more mature blooms that are losing their coloring, or variations in exposure to light.
