Is there anything more full of life and energy than a new puppy? Our furry family members add joy and love to our homes – and it is because of their spirit that we celebrate National Puppy Day. Colleen Paige, who is the person behind the dog holiday, established the observance primarily to bring awareness regarding population control, puppy mills, and the tireless efforts of rescue shelters across America.
At Schaaf Floral, we create floral designs that honor our fur babies in adorable style – for any occasion!
Statistics tell us that there is a canine overpopulation issue in the United States, which is worsened by too much breeding-for-profit, as well as non-responsible owners. Over four million dogs are surrendered to rescue shelters each year, and sadly 1.7 million dogs and puppies are euthanized annually. Only one-third of dogs in shelters are ever adopted, meaning that many never find their forever home. Therefore, the organizers of National Puppy Day encourage pet owners to save a life by adopting from a local shelter.
Do Shelter Pets Have Behavioral Problems? Only 10% of shelter animals are surrendered because of a behavior issue, and they are often very well socialized after living among so many other animals. Those who routinely work with these animals will attest to the affectionate and compliant demeanor of these animals – who are always so grateful to find a place to belong.
On National Puppy Day, Minneapolis residents are encouraged to adopt a shelter puppy – but if that is not an option, to donate to a local no-kill shelter. Other options to get involved include volunteering at the shelter or fostering one of the dogs temporarily. If you would like to have a “thank you” floral arrangement delivered to someone who sacrifices their time and energy to help these animals, give Schaaf Floral a call – we’d love to help.
