As florists, we see the shape of flowers in everything and thought we were seeing things when we came across some awesome flower-shaped buildings. Like a Lotus Blossom spinning on the surface of the water, the ArtScience museum in Singapore floats above the ground with radiating petals of differing heights bringing the beauty of nature into the urban landscape. A stunning building that curves upward seamlessly, the structure also has a lot of sustainable and energy-efficient features. The tip of every petal has skylights so natural sunlight can illuminate the art galleries within. The very center of the flower has an oculus where rainwater pours down into a waterfall that goes all the way through the center of the building emptying into a reflection pool on the lowest level. The water is then recycled to create a continuous waterfall loop as well as provide water to the restrooms and the exterior landscape. The base of the structure is located underneath the ground which allows for the upper flower section to appear weightless and floating.
Lotus Blossom

Also shaped like a Lotus Blossom, the Lotus Temple in Delhi highlights the symmetry of this flower and its beauty. Perfectly symmetrical from all angles, there are three rows of leaves encircling an interior dome. The lower level of leaves curve outwards creating a canopy rooftop over each of the nine entrances. Surrounding the structure in front of each entrance is a reflection pool. The water from the pools not only provides cool air to the interior of the building also gives the illusion this concrete flower is floating on water. On the inside, there are no decorations aside from the light and shade from the sun and water reflecting off the walls. Open to all faiths and all religions, the Lotus Temple is one of the most visited sites in the world

Calla Lily

Boldly rising up from the land and facing the sun, Wuhan Energy Flower building is an example of sustainable architecture and the use of new energy sources. The design is inspired by the calla lily, an elegant and majestic flower. The circular roof is covered with solar panels in order to soak up the sun’s energy. Also, being tilted at an angle allows the roof to provide shade to the office buildings in the tower underneath during the hottest days of summer in China. The rooftop is also chalice-shaped and catches rainwater to recycle it throughout the building for use in restrooms and for watering gardens. The large vertical pistil houses wind turbines for another alternative energy source utilized by the building. The Energy Flower has zero carbon emissions is one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable buildings in the world.

When coming across Motisons Tower, you will be stunned by the enormous colorful leaves sprouting out of the rectangular base. Three large lotus leaves rise up into the sky from each side of the building. The rich jewel tones of the leaves rimmed in gold are striking. For the real spectacle and magic of this building, though, you will have to wait until night time. That is when the lotus leaves come to life with bright LED pulsating colors that change every few minutes. It is a structural marvel and a wonderful example of what modern architecture can accomplish.
