This year, March 19th is the first day of spring, but the flowers won’t know what day it is. They can sense the lengthening days and warming temperatures, and this is how they know when it’s time to resume growing and get ready to bloom.

The Big Hitter

In the United States, we recognize the vernal equinox as the first day of spring, but people in other parts of the world use different systems, like the lunar calendar, to track the seasons. In Japan, people take their cue from the flowers, and spring doesn’t officially begin until the national flowers, cherry blossoms, have bloomed.

When Do Flowers Start Blooming in Spring?

The first flowers of the year don’t even wait for spring. Even in cold climates, flowers like snowdrops, crocuses, and Lenten roses push their way through the snow to bloom as early as late January!

True spring flowers typically begin blooming around the end of March and beginning of April. Among the first to bloom are daffodils, tulips, irises, hyacinths, and pansies. Other flowers need more time to develop and more sun before they’re ready to bloom. These late spring flowers include peonies, daisies, bluebells, and roses.

It’s not easy to pick a few favorite flowers out of all the lovely spring blossoms, but these flowers, with their radiant colors, are particularly refreshing after a dark, dreary winter.

1. Tulips

Spring wouldn’t be the same without the playful beauty of tulips. With thousands of varieties, tulips bloom in just about every color and combination of colors possible. In general, they represent love, but specific colors do have more specific symbolic meanings. For example, yellow tulips represent happy thoughts, red tulips represent true love, and white tulips are for forgiveness.

2. Roses

Roses are popular year-round, but they’re actually in season during spring. As a result, spring roses are the freshest, most beautiful, and most affordable roses you’ll find all year. Like tulips, they also bloom in many colors and varieties, including a couple of artificial colors (blue and black). Each color of rose has a different meaning, and it can be used to communicate several sentiments. Pink roses demonstrate gentle admiration, orange roses are for passionate feelings, red roses represent romance, and yellow roses are for friendship.

3. Primroses

Primroses symbolize young love, which seems to blossom alongside the flowers during springtime. They’re also incredibly vibrant. With clusters of flowers at the center of deep-green foliage, they bloom in blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, and white.

4. Freesia

Freesias are a symbol of friendship, and they’re most well-known for their recognizable scent, which is used in many fragrances, lotions, and candles. They’re actually quite beautiful, too. They feature up to twelve solid or multicolored blossoms per stem and bloom in vibrant shades of mauve, purple, lavender, pink, gold, orange, red, and white.

5. Pansies

Pansies represent admiration and free thought, and they bloom freely with smatterings of various colors in different combinations and patterns. Their petals resemble cute, little faces, making them look as if they’re smiling up you.

6. Irises

These tall beauties stand out in the garden and look lovely in as a centerpiece in a cylindrical vase. They get their name from the Greek word for rainbow, and they bloom in just about as many colors. Depending on the hue, their symbolic meanings range from passion to purity.

7. Ranunculus

These flowers are so alluring that they actually represent charm and attractiveness. They bloom in beautiful shades of purple, pink, cream, gold, and white with infinitely unraveling petals.
